Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated March 29, 1944 reads, "Shown above are three checks which were introduced into evidence by the defense at the Chaplin trial today. They were produced by Claude H. Rosenstein, Tulsa Okla., attorney, who was the first defense witness today. Two of the checks were for payment of Joan Barry's hotel bills and the other was for payment of her railroad expenses."
