Photograph caption dated December 9, 1939 reads, "Listening critically, the audience is shown hearing the speech of a girl entrant. All the extemporaneous remarks were marked by the clear thinking and eloquent speaking that the oratorical contest seeks to promote among the young people of Los Angeles." Note: Mary Ellen Ryan of Washington High School is the young woman pictured on the stage.
