Description
"The Japanese in Rural Los Angeles County," by Ralph Burnight, published as Sociological Monograph 16 of "Studies in Sociology," volume [4], number 4, by the Southern California Sociological Society, University of Southern California and the University of Southern California Press, 1920 June. The 16-page item consists of an analysis of the conditions of the Japanese population in the rural, farming districts of the county and specifically addressing concerns about Japanese poverty, sanitation issues, the presence of their children in public schools, and assimilation. Burnight concludes with twelve points or conditions he found to exist among the Japanese. Significantly, the author identifies "ignorance and race prejudice" as barriers to assimilation and suggests education on both sides. In good condition, the artifact has corner, edge, and spine rubbing, creases, soiling on the cover, discoloration on pages and the cover, a loss to the last page and at the top right corner of page 11, light stains on the cover and pages, staple tarnish, and some spine tears.
