This signage identifies the statue: "Bodhisattva Statue According to the Mahavamsa this statue has been identified as the statue of Bodhisattva Maitreya, made by King Dappula 1 (7th century A.D.). It can also be identified as a statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, as it depicts the figure of a dhyāni on the crest; but according to Sri Lankan Buddhist tradition very often Avalokiteshvara figures are identified as Maitri Natha statues."
