Text: Mirisavetiya Rajamaha Vihara. The chronicle Mahavamsa mentions that King Dutugemunu (161-137 BC) repenting for having partaken a chili garnished curry without bestowing it to the Sangha had donated a dagoba enshrining his scepter and other associated buildings to the Sangha community. Later Kings Gajabahu (112-134 AC), Voharikatissa (214-236 AC), Parakramabahu the Great (1153-1186 AC) and Nissankamalla (1187-1196) had renovated and enlarged adding ancillary buildings. A large area encompassing ruins indicates that this monastery had comprised all appurtenances of a Maha vihara. Among these ruins one could identify independent architectural creations. The ornate carvings of the ayakas or the gateways of this dagoba have been identified as the finest carvings in Sri Lanka. --Director General of Archeology
