Description
Hotel Rochester decorated for Street Fair, Orange, California, 1910. Rochester Hotel was begun in 1887 by builder Major E.A. Warner and designed by local architect C.B. Bradshaw. Image shows corner view of the three-story hotel, located at 310 West Chapman Avenue at the southwest corner of Lemon and Chapman. Bunting hangs from each of the three stories, as well as the corner tower. Signage at the corner sidewalk reads "HOTEL ROCHESTER" and figures are visible sitting on hotel porch along the right side. After failure of tourist industry, the hotel building was sold in 1889 to Rev. J.H. Harwood and converted into the Orange County Collegiate Institute, the county's first college, which operated from 1889-1891. It operated as a hotel until it was raized in June, 1931, on the current site of the Orange Post Office which opened in 1935.
