Photograph of the sheep herder, who accompanied H. H. West and company on a camping trip to Kosk Creek, cooks up biscuits in camp. The sheep herder stands bent over at center and faces towards the camera. The Dutch oven sits on the ground to his left. He lifts the lid off the pot and uses a stick to stir the coals on the Dutch oven's lid. To the left of the sheep herder and Dutch oven, ashes from the campfire smolder. Trees surround the campsite and extend into the distance.
Text from negative sleeve: 1040. Trinity County trip, 1917. Kosk Creek-Cayton Valley. 1. The sheep herder we had with us took my dutch oven and made a batch of real camp biscuits. I took 4 small pictures showing him making the dough, cooking in the Dutch oven over a bed of coals and when done showing them to us. Done a beautiful golden brown, and delicious with molasses. 2. Wilfrid Cline Jr getting a pail of water at the spring. It was called Poison Spring, but the water was excellent. 3. Large film. We are all packed to leave Cayton for home. Left to right Harry Schmitz, John Bidwell, Wilfrid xx Cline Jr. I have a five gal oil can hung on rear. We have been using it to wash clothes. 1 large, 5 small films
