Description: Scope/Content: Abstract: Freshwater mussel surveys were conducted above and below Carter's Dam, Conewango Creek, Warren County, Pennsylvania in order to assess potential effects on the removal of the dam. Sampling took place in July and August of 2005. A total of 1,191 individuals representing 16 species of mussels were located, which includes the location of 2 individuals of the federally endangered northern riffleshell mussel. Sampling methodology followed Smith et al. (2001). Overall, species richness varied from 4 to 7.8 mussels per cell. To accommodate dam removal, 598 mussels were removed from the direct impact areas most threatened by dam removal and relocated to upstream sites. Flow was observed to have caused scour along the right descending bank below the dam. Overall, there appears to be no federally listed species in the direct impact area of the dam. Dam removal should be planned in a way that minimizes effects on freshwater mussels and host fishes.
