The regimental orderly book, including regimental, brigade, and general orders, kept by Peter Crane, ensign and adjutant of the regiment. The manuscript consists of two parts. The first contains regimental, brigade, and general orders of the 24th Regiment from January 1 through Feb. 29, 1776. The second portion covers the month between July 7 and through August 7, 1776 and titled "General Orders by the Honorable Horatio Gates Major General in the Army of the United States of North America and Commander of the Northern Department at Ticonderoga." The manuscript is bound in paper; fragments of records pertaining to the Crane family reinforce flyleaves and binding. Approximately 30 leaves are missing at the end of the manuscript. The 24th Continental regiment was a Massachusetts regiment that served until December 1, 1776. The regiment was under command of Colonel John Greaton and was attached to Heath's Brigade (until April), and then to the 1st Brigade commanded by Benedict Arnold. HM 612.
