Al Lapin Jr., along with his brother Jerry, founded the IHOP chain of restaurants. The chain started with a single restaurant in Toluca Lake and grew into a conglomerate of several other businesses including Orange Julius, Will Wrights Ice Cream Parlors, Michael's Artist and Engineering supplies, Shirt Gallery and a host of other restaurants and subsidiaries, all overseen under his parent company, International Industries Inc. He died in 2004 at the age of 76.
Photograph caption dated November 26, 1963 reads, "Mayor Sam Yorty, in behalf of the city of Los Angeles, presents Al Lapin Jr., president of International Industries Inc., with a resolution of gratitude for his contribution to the sister city program. The Golden Oaks, a division of International Industries Inc., hosted official visitors from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, on their tour here. In addition, executives from the Golden Oaks, a luxury apartment hotel for senior citizens, arranged for significant discussions between representatives of our senior citizens programs and the visiting Brazilians in the interests of creating better understanding between our two people."
