Photograph caption dated June 16, 1965 reads "Ed McPhee, chairman of Olive Vista Junior High School's vocational education department, in striped shirt, checks balloon apparatus prior to a noon launch by the school's science students. Elwood Hale, leader of the project, with dark sunglasses, checks the release mechanism while students make last-minute adjustments. Yesterday's launch, alas, was not successful." The school is in Sylmar.
