It opened in September 1947, with 70 students and 18 faculty members and is part of the Los Angeles Community College District. The school's initial focus was crop cultivation and animal husbandry, and still retains a large swatch of open fields for hands-on working farm training. In 1956 the school was renamed Los Angeles Pierce College. Photograph caption dated May 4, 1955 reads, "Erwin Neal, who won above saddle at recent Idaho rodeo, Sue Schnaidt, Pierce College rodeo queen, and Vera Vague, honorary mayor of Woodland Hills, view trophy to be awarded at Pierce's annual intercollegiate rodeo Saturday and Sunday at Pierce Arena, Canoga Park." Comedy actress, Barbara Jo Allen was sometimes credited as 'Vera Vague.'
