Waist-length portrait.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1817 to John Ferdinand and Mary Mowley. Arrived in California in May 5, 1854 via ship through Panama. Settled in Nevada City before moving to Sacramento around 1863. Married photographer Julia Ann Swift in 1856. Worked as chemist and pharmacist, analyzing samples of water for the Central Pacific railroad from Sacramento to Ogden. Died in Laredo, Texas in 1896.
