Exterior view of the fourth building to house the San Pedro Banch Library. This 6,000 sq. ft. structure, designed by San Pedro architect James H. Friend, cost $125,000 to build and furnish, and was the first branch to be built after a ten year break in city library construction. In the upper right side of the building, there is an empty space, which was later filled with a mural. Other images (00059806 and 00059792) show the completed mural, which depicts the San Pedro Harbor as it appeared in 1850. The caption that accompanies this image notes, "Readers relax in the browsing corner of the new San Pedro Public Library, latest addition to the Los Angeles Public Library System, and one of the most modern library buildings on the coast. A complete departure from the standard Carnegie building, the new branch stresses good light, comfortable chairs, and movable book shelves for expansion or consolidation of book stock."
