Text: Remains of four phases of construction from the 1st century BC have been discovered at this Refectory, which is also mentioned in the 10th century Abhayagiriya inscription of King Kassyapa V (914-923 AD). Chinese Monk Fa-Hien in the fifth century mentions that 5,000 monks resided at Abhayagiriya. The stone canoe of 19 meters in length exceeds the capacity of 5,000 alms bowls and underground conduits supplying water to the building are also visible.
