Description
Image appeared in the Salinas Californian Newspaper Saturday September 21, 1963. Caption: Pumping water for irrigation purposes in Salinas Valley was begun in earnest during the dry year of 1897-98. During that season many of the pioneer wells were bored in the valley floor. One of these was used by the late John A. Armstrong on the family's home place in the Blanco district (pictured above). Long time residents familiar with the history of pumping for irrigation will recall the type of equipment used during that dry season, such as the centrifugal pump shown here. Image was printed from a metal plate. Salinas Californian newspaper owns the copyright to the print. Contact the Californian for use.
