Description
This photograph of Murf's Market at 1600 Broadway was taken on January 18, 1944. “Murf” was Albert J. Murphy, a Nebraska native and butcher who would eventually align his business with the Inks brothers and their various Cardinal grocery stores. For decades after, the building was a satellite of the Tower book and record empire. By 2007 it was operating as R-5 Records under the ownership of Russ Solomon, former head of the Tower chain. Several cars are parked out front; there is an advertisement for Coca-Cola painted above the front door, and an advertisement for Petri Wine can be seen in one of the windows.
