Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Photograph caption dated October 26, 1931 reads, "With a scientific machine, Dr. Ray K. Immel, dean of the University of Southern California School of Speech, plans experiments to find the causes of stuttering. The device, shown in operation, records air pressure from mouth and nose and movements of tongue, larynx, each lip and so on. Contact apparatus is clamped on the subject and tubes from it actuate "tambours," shown by arrow, which write out the record, each "tambour" marking action of one particular organ. Dr. Immel says that while one sound is being made, muscles already are being brought into play for the next sound. This may give rise to conflicts that cause stuttering."
