This is an audio recording of Bill May’s response to Peter Drucker’s talk about managing increasing complexity of large organizations. He states that at first he thought he was not going to be able to agree with everything Drucker said, however he found all the differences in opinion were minor nuances, as the talk went on, he found he had fewer issues. May goes on to caution one of the most important things he thinks we need to do is be careful of assuming responsibilities which we cannot fulfill, something the government tends to do as “a political animal”. He also discusses the idea that every successful business is a bunch of smaller businesses. This is something he says can offer more flexibility and security if done well, but it can also lose the advantages of both big and small business. Something that concerns May is the trend line toward nationalism, sovereignty, and restrictive trade practices. He believes it will be inimical to the world economy and inhibit the performance of the free market.
