Michael and Connie begin the interview talking about the opening of the American West following the establishment of the Oregon Trail in the 1840s. For the majority of the interview, Michael discusses a number of the stories from his book that reveal the history of conflict between whites and Native Americans in the American West. Among the topics Michael talks about are the opening of the gold fields across the American West, broken treaties, and a number of the personalities, like General William S. Harney, Colonel John M. Chivington, and Charles B. Gatewood, that helped foster conflict across the 19th century American West. Connie and Michael end the interview talking about George A. Custer, the complex figure that he was, and the role he played in the American military and in the wars for the American West.
