Description
Nisei female, daughter of Minayo, was born November 27, 1912 in Florin, California. She was betrothed in Japan at age sixteen but her request to go to high school was refused as her parents felt that girls dont need an education. She married Chiaki Fukuman in 1936 and had four children. She left her husband in 1956 and returned to Sacramento with the children. She had tuberculosis for five years and was hospitalized at the sanitarium in Weimar, California for fifteen months. She worked for twenty years at Oki Nursery in Sacramento. Included in the appendix in the bound copy is an essay by her grandson, Stephen Egawa, born in 1969. He chronicles the familys history, plight of women raising children in crisis and Japanese American identity.
