Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of Fred Hamilton working on his car while Al Schmitz stands and watches from the backseat. The car is stopped in the middle of a dirt road. It is towing H. H. West's Buick (out-of-frame) from Willow Springs to Mojave. Hamilton's car is at center and is viewed at an angle from the side and rear; it faces left. A rope extends from the rear end of the car at right and out-of-frame. Fred Hamilton stands to the side of his car near the front passenger door and faces towards the right. In the back seat, Al Schmitz stands and faces towards the left, looking down towards Fred. A brush-covered landscape stands on either side of the dirt road and extends into the distance. Mountains are barely visible in the far distance at center. Text from negative sleeve: 1337. Willow Springs, Calif. May 29, 1917. See envelope #1336. The garage at Willow Springs was run by the Hamiltons. They could not fix my car, and we arranged for them to tow us to Mojave. Out of Willow Springs about 3 miles the Hamilton tow car broke down. We had to get another car to tow us to Mojave. 1. Hamilton tow car broke down. Al Schmitz standing up in tow car watching the attempted repairs. Wilfrid Cline Jr at his right also looking on. Glen Velzy in my Buick at the wheel. 2.
