A two-story clapboard house with a wide porch covered in climbing roses owned by General George Stoneman on his Los Robles estate in San Gabriel (now San Marino, California). General Stoneman stands to the left, and two women stand on the porch, while four children sit on the steps.
Title transcribed from photo-mount. Date devised by cataloger; Watkins made two trips to Southern California, in 1877 and 1880. Watkins New Series stereo #4396. Written in pencil on verso: "This is the residence of the celebrated cavalry leader [?] of the last war. Gen. Stoneman he stands in front of the house having laid aside the sword for the hoe. His wife stands the farthest one inside. his [sic] place here is valued at not less than $100,000.00. He has been asking 125 thousand for it. This rosebush is a fair representation of how the rose flourishes in this country this is a pure white running rose called Lamarque and all the season through which is all the year it is much like this. makes a profussion [sic] of blossoms. Down near them the horse stand is the rose bush that is over 16 inches in diameter at the base a wonderful thing." Another line written at the bottom is illegible.
