Description
Lois W. Banner discusses her book, “Intertwined Lives: Margaret Mead, Ruth Benedict, and Their Circle.” Banner talks about “smashing” and Benedict and Mead’s close relationship. She says men and women were attracted to Benedict and Mead, and talks about their relationships. Banner discusses Mead’s husbands, Gregory Bateson and Reo Fortune. She goes on to talk about Mead and Benedict’s scholarship, the influence of Franz Boas, anthropologists’ roles in World War II, the “Ash Can Cats,” and Mead and free love.
