Jeffrey Vance discusses his book, “Chaplin.” He begins by sharing some of Charlie Chaplin’s background, such as, his birth in England and his childhood working on stage. He explains that Chaplin’s first film was called “Making a Living,” but he did not create the character of the tramp until his second and third films. He goes on to discuss Chaplin’s work in the film “The Kid” and how Chaplin hated working on location and preferred the controlled environment of the studio. Vance then explores some of Chaplin’s marriages and scandals. Later in the interview Vance discusses the formation of United Artist and Chaplin’s role in the company.
