Removed from D. O. Mills Collection.
Crawford W. Clarke born in New Albany, Indiana in 1828. Crossed via overland route to California in 1850, where engaged in gold mining. In 1852, with Fred Cox, formed Clarke & Cox, a firm engaged in cattle and butchering industry in Shingle Springs. Company eventually owned land throughout state, Clarke involved in variety of businesses: North Fork Ditch Company, reclamation projects, Capital bank of California, Pacific Mutual and Home Mutual Insurances Companies. Died in 1913.
