A view of a street in the foreground and two houses on far side of street next to a commercial building on the left of the photo; on the right is a two story house with stairs and railing leading up to front door; a round arched porch with columns is in front of 1st floor; to right of entrance are two vertical windows; on 2nd floor are three vertical windows below the roof; at end of property is a low decorative fence which also stands in front of 2nd house on the left;2nd house is obscured by leafless trees but is 2 stories.
Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento.
"Property of Van Alstine family, house of the right erected in 1854, lower story, 2 stories added on when the streets were raised about 10 feet, in 1875."
