Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of Al Schmitz standing in his and H. H. West's campsite at Paradise Flat near the Santa Ynez River. Rock-covered ground spans the foreground, giving way to a dirt road midway up the image that stretches on an upward angle from left to right. Al Schmitz stands at left in the near distance on the opposite side of the road. He looks to the camera as he stands beneath a tree and next to his Buick Runabout. The Runabout is parked to his right and is viewed at an angle from the rear and the side; it faces right. Further down the road at right stands H. H. West's miner' tent. Trees stand parallel to the road as they line the background. Text from negative sleeve: 1228. Santa Ynez Creek, July 4, 1919. Al Schmitz and I decide to go to Santa Ynez creek, over the grade from Gaviota to fish Santa Ynez, and also Santa Cruz where a man named Olds from Oxnard told me was fine fishing. We get a map of the location from a furniture dealer in Santa Barbara, a customer of Al's. We go in Al's Buick runabout; got stuck in the Santa Ynez River and had to camp at Paradise Flat. 1. The Buick stuck fast in the Santa Ynez. We had to undress and unload it and build a track with rocks to get back out and camped right there. Al Schmitz taking off his shoes. 2. We get out and make camp. Al Schmtiz and my miner's tent. 3. Our camp and Al Schmitz. Nice place. 4. Al Schmitz at the stove. That is my camp outfit. Never found Santa Cruz. 4 films
